چکیده

Genetic studies are increasingly detecting cryptic taxa that likely represent a significant component of global biodiversity. However, often criticized because they typically detected serendipitously and may not receive the follow-up study required to verify their geographic or evolutionary limits. Here, we Eucalyptus salubris unexpectedly two divergent lineages but was sampled sufficiently make clear interpretations. We undertook comprehensive sampling for an independent genomic analysis (3,605 SNPs) investigate whether purported remain discrete genetic entities if intergrade throughout species’ range. also assessed morphological ecological traits, sequenced chloroplast DNA. SNP results showed strong genome-wide divergence (FST = 0.252) between lineages: one dominated north southern regions Within lineages, gene flow high, with low differentiation (mean FST 0.056) spanning hundreds kilometers. In central region, were interspersed maintained distinctiveness: indirect demonstration reproductive isolation. Populations lineage exhibited significantly lower specific leaf area occurred on soils phosphorus relative northern lineage. Finally, major haplotypes associated each shared in distribution. Together, these suggest have non-contemporary origins ecotypic adaptive processes strengthened more recently. conclude warrant taxonomic recognition as separate species provide fascinating insight into eucalypt speciation.

Reproductive interference between honeybee species in artificial sympatry.

Reproductive isolation between closely related species is often incomplete. The Western honeybee, Apis mellifera, and the Eastern hive bee, Apis cerana, have been allopatric for millions of years, but are nonetheless similar in morphology and behaviour. During the last century, the two species were brought into contact anthropogenically, providing potential opportunities for interspecific matin...

Ancient polymorphisms and divergence hitchhiking contribute to genomic islands of divergence within a poplar species complex

How genome divergence eventually leads to speciation is a topic of prime evolutionary interest. Genomic islands of elevated divergence are frequently reported between diverging lineages, and their size is expected to increase with time and gene flow under the speciation-with-gene-flow model. However, such islands can also result from divergent sorting of ancient polymorphisms, recent ecological...

Sympatry with the devil: reproductive interference could hamper species coexistence.

1. As species are often considered discrete natural units, interspecific sexual interactions are often disregarded as potential factors determining community composition. Nevertheless reproductive interference, ranging from signal jamming to hybridization, can have significant costs for species sharing similar signal channels. 2. We combined laboratory and field experiments to test whether the ...

Contemporary Evolution of Reproductive Isolation and Phenotypic Divergence in Sympatry along a Migratory Divide

Understanding the influence of human-induced changes on the evolutionary trajectories of populations is a fundamental problem [1, 2]. The evolution of reproductive isolation in sympatry is rare, relying on strong selection along steep ecological gradients [3-7]. Improved wintering conditions owing to human activities promoted the recent establishment of a migratory divide in Central European bl...

Ecological divergence promotes the evolution of cryptic reproductive isolation.

Speciation can involve the evolution of 'cryptic' reproductive isolation that occurs after copulation but before hybrid offspring are produced. Because such cryptic barriers to gene exchange involve post-mating sexual interactions, analyses of their evolution have focused on sexual conflict or traditional sexual selection. Here, we show that ecological divergence between populations of herbivor...
